Fleur de Lis Faversham
Fleur De Lis Heritage Center
A museum in Faversham. The museum features exhibits related to: personalities, medicine, maritime, archeology, natural sciences, costume and textiles, archives, science and technology, weapons and war and social history.
Visitors can follow the growth in trade and commerce after the Norman Conquest which made Faversham a bustling and prosperous Elizabethan town with trade links to London and to Northern Europe. Signs of this prosperity can be seen in the large number of well built timber-framed buildings from that period that still exist in the town today, as well as in the surrounding villages.
The Museum shows information and related artefacts and images on all Faversham's major industries as well as the farming of the surrounding land:
Local hop growing supplied breweries in Faversham including Shepherd Neame - which still operates as the oldest independent brewery in the UK - whilst also supporting coopering. Fruit growing has also been a mainstay of the local economy.
Alder and Willows on surrounding marshland produced excellent charcoal, an important ingredient in explosives which made Faversham one of the most important sites for explosives production from as early as the 16th Century.
Local clay fields generated a prosperous brick making industry, demand for which increased dramatically in the Industrial Revolution whilst the arrival of trains improved transport for delivery of finished products.
Essential to all the trades, Faversham Creek and its maintenance allowed local shipbuilding to prosper in the production of the eye-catching Thames Barges with their characteristic red sails and, in the 20th Century, the building of a wide range of motor vessels and warships at the Pollock Shipyard.

Mount Ephraim Gardens
Mount Ephraim Country House & Gardens is a privately-owned family home comprising of over 800 acres of woodland, pasture and a fruit farm. At the heart of the estate lies the main house and gardens with stunning views over the surrounding countryside. In the ten acres of enchanting Edwardian gardens, terraces of fragrant roses lead to a small lake and woodland area overlooking orchards. A wide collection of spring bulbs and many beautiful mature trees are other highlights. Whether you want to picnic by the lake, explore the arboretum, or stroll through the rose gardens, there is something for everyone and no two visits are the same.
The estate has been owned by the Dawes family since 1695 and is still run by members of the family today. It's this family touch that lends Mount Ephraim Gardens their personal charm. First laid out in the early 1900s by Willie and Jeanie Dawes, the gardens suffered through wartime neglect and damage from use by the army. However, in the early 1950s Mary and Bill Dawes poured their hearts and souls into restoring them with Mary involved heavily in the day-to-day running until her death in 2009 at the dignified age of 93.
Today, the gardens continue to be cared for by two full time gardeners and some occasional part time and volunteer help under the instruction of Mary's son Sandys and his wife Lesley. Although not trained gardeners or horticulturalists, Sandys and Lesley have a great love for the gardens and the willingness and energy to take forward the legacy that Mary has left behind.
