Woodlands

Picture of some of the Kent Ancient Woodland Trees

Dunkirk is lucky enough to be surrounded by Ancient Woodlands, but in Kent there are ancient woodlands throughout the whole county.

In history, the Naval dockyard at Chatham saw many of the Ancient Oak trees being felled to be utilised in the building of all of the great Royal Navy ships, from Frigates to the 100 Gun, men of War.

There are many areas of ancient woodland that still exist today throughout the county of Kent, it is now treated as a precious resource and many trees are now protected by Tree Preservation Orders (TPO's) restricting the felling of certain trees. The TPO's also mean that any planning considerations must take account of any trees that might fall in to any proposed building works or change of use of the site. Prosecutions of people breaking the rules around TPO's can result in Fines and or Jail for offenders.

All of the above images show photographs of different Ancient Woodlands within easy travelling distance of Dunkirk.

For any tree preservation issues, please go the the Swale Borough Council website Tree Preservation page.
